The Northern Isles Art Society, Norðoya listafelag, is more than thirty years old. The society was first and foremost founded to support art and artists in the region by garnering interest in art, buying and owning works of art, as well as putting on exhibitions and other art events. The society’s exhibitions have focused on artists from the Northern Isles. The society’s annual exhibition has traditionally been held during the Northern Isles Festival, where both established and up-and-coming artist have been able to exhibit and sell their works.
SUMMER ART 2017 paves a new path.
Something good is happening on the art scene in town. With the purchase of the Post Office, which turns fifty this year, the town council has laid the foundations for new artistic ventures. The Post Office, including a large new extension, will in the future house most of the town’s cultural life. It will be home to the art society, the theatre company and all kinds of music. Here you will find a large stage for performances and a variety of halls to be used for exhibitions, etc. With SUMMER ART 2017 we hope to fan the current artistic flame in Klaksvík. SUMMER ART 2017 is an exhibition held at two locations. The exhibition opens toward the end of May at the Northern Isles Festival and runs through the summer, closing at the end of the town’s last summer event, the Day of the Sailor in August. One location is retrospective, containing interesting works by Northern Isles artist that have passed away.
The art society owns most of these work, though some are privately held. The old shop „Isenkram,“ located on the top floor of the Tourist Information Office, houses this part of the exhibition. The other location (contemporary) is the Post Office Basement. You find it by going downstairs from the rear entrance. Here, well-known and experienced artists will exhibit their works, which are for sale.
